Expectations for Northern Lights Tours

Joining a Northern Lights tour is a unique experience, but it is essential to start with the right expectations. This is not a man-made show: it is pure nature—unpredictable and often surprising. And that is exactly where its beauty lies.
🌌 The aurora cannot truly be predicted
The aurora is a natural phenomenon linked to solar activity and Earth’s atmosphere.
There is no app that can predict it with certainty. Apps you find online show technical data (like the KP index), but these are often misunderstood or oversimplified. Even with “high” values, the aurora might not be visible where you are—and sometimes it appears when you least expect it.
🎨 Colors and intensity: not always like in photos
The color and intensity of the aurora change every night.
It is not always bright green like in photos
Often it appears faint, whitish, or with subtle shades
Photos are usually taken with long exposure, enhancing colors and details not visible to the naked eye
When the aurora is strong, it can be spectacular in real life—often better than photos—but pictures may appear “overexposed”
🎟️ Paying for a tour does not guarantee the aurora
Let’s be clear:
you are not paying to see the aurora, but for the best possible chance to see it.
Most of the time you will, but it does not depend on us—it depends on nature.
🚐 The tour maximizes your chances
Our goal is to maximize your chances of seeing the aurora:
we actively move to find clear skies
we use local knowledge of microclimates
It is possible to see the aurora from the city, but:
light pollution significantly reduces the experience
👉 Be proactive: always look at the sky, even when you are in town.
Some important realities:
you might not see it during the tour, but see it the day before or after in the city
you might see it before or after your tour
👉 This is normal. It’s nature.
Tours are scheduled in the evening hours, when aurora activity is generally more frequent, to increase your chances.
Is it possible that:
while you are out on tour, the aurora appears in the city?
👉 Rare, but possible. Clouds move, and forecasts are not perfect.
As a general rule:
on your own: around 20% chance
with a tour: up to around 90% chance
This is thanks to mobility, experience, and local knowledge—but it is never a guarantee.
🌦️ Arctic weather is unpredictable
Weather in Northern Norway changes quickly and often dramatically.
Forecasts can be completely wrong
Just 30 minutes from Tromsø, conditions can be totally different
👉 Do not rely on weather apps
👉 Trust your guides, who will do everything possible to find the best conditions
🚐 Arctic driving conditions
During the tour you may experience:
icy roads
heavy snow
wind and storms
These are part of the Arctic experience.
They are not a problem—they are the essence of the journey.
🧭 Don’t come only for the aurora
The aurora should be the cherry on top, not the only reason for your trip.
The real value of the experience is:
the Arctic landscape
the silence
the wild nature
⏱️ Long tours and focused driving
Tours can be demanding, with several hours of driving.
During the journey:
the guide must stay focused on driving
they will speak when possible, but safety always comes first
☕️ Comfort during the tour
To make your experience more enjoyable:
Minivan & minibus: hot drinks, vegan cookies, soups (vegan or meat, gluten-free and lactose-free)
Big bus: cookies and hot drinks
🅿️ Shared stopping areas
During high season:
stopping areas are often shared with other companies
this is unavoidable due to limited infrastructure and high visitor numbers
Minivans and minibuses sometimes access alternative spots, but this is never guaranteed.
🔥 Fire and conditions
A fire will be made only if conditions allow it (wind, safety, ground conditions).

Safety and environmental respect always come first.
❓ Communication during the tour
If you have questions or doubts:
👉 Talk to your guide
👉 Ask questions during the tour
🌠 Embracing unpredictability
If the aurora does not appear or the weather does not cooperate:
do not be disappointed.
The Arctic is:
unpredictable
authentic
wild
💡 In summary:
We do not sell a guaranteed show.
We offer a real Arctic experience—with all its beauty, uncertainty, and magic.
